Saw this $120 fancy key on my local Craigslist, and now I want a key that looks like something earned in a side quest for each of my dull cars.
I was unaware that “fashion keys” were a thing, and have enjoyed a little plummet down an internet rabbit hole on the topic.
This article really goes in depth to how the Miata’s stock key was weak, and these pretty keys
have
a heft and strength that made them desirable beyond their regal looks.

As someone who bent his Miata key while turning it in the door once, I can confirm that the stock key is a little weak.

Get a NSX key for your Civic! Honda still had both the “normal” rubberized key and the cool metallic key as late as 2014.

let me be clear, part of my “hot take” is that Miatas are boring.

I want my keys to be flat and not occupy much space in my pocket, so I’ve taken to melting/burning the plastic or rubber sheath off the handle. I don’t know if that makes it more or less boring.

If my key had an ignition that took a key, I would be interested in an understated but elegant looking key.

The keys that most stand out in my memory we’re the two sets of gold plated ones my grandparents got with their new sedan de ville . Gorgeous.

My Previa key was pretty seriously bent, but it worked, so good enough for me. Sincethen I’ve had switchblade keys so bending isn’t a big concern (they are pretty thick too). Though I only have one key for my current car, which seems like it will bite me in the ass at some point...

My bent key could unlock the doors, but wouldn't start the car. We were able to straighten it enough to get a copy made, and the copy works fine.

I’ve still got both sets of those titanium keys laying around. Really cool stuff. Miss that Z. Once in awhile.
